Started by Outdoorsman

In 1945, the production of metal was skyrocketing thanks to the end of World War II. During this time, Hetteen Hoist and & Derrick was a small organization that specialized in crafting one-of-a-kind machines for farmers. However, this work was seasonal. When they weren’t working, the men behind the company were exploring the outdoors. They wanted an easier way to cover long distances in the snow so they could fish and hunt. This is why they manufactured their first snowmobile. The machine quickly grew in popularity within the region. 

 

Growing and Evolving

By 1960, the company had become known as Polaris. They started by selling transport vehicles but soon expanded their offerings to include sports machines. After selling to Textron, Polaris kept growing into the 1970s. But a recession hit Polaris and the rest of the industry hard. At the end of the decade, only three manufacturers in the market were left.

 

Adapting and Innovating

Polaris wasn’t going down without a fight. Although they were facing a potential shutdown and liquidation, they kept their hopes high. Instead of selling the company, the president at the time led a buyout of Polaris and quit Textron. With just 100 employees, the brand started up again with a focus on innovation. With every new model, they hoped to improve on previous designs. In 1984 they entered the ATV market. Just a few years later in 1990, Polaris became the first major US powersports manufacturer to sell a personal watercraft line.

This ability to adapt and innovate is what sets this brand apart from the competition. With every new venture, the company has focused on giving customers durable and safe machines. Involvement in the community has also helped the company stay connected with customers and their ever-changing needs.
